CoE holds successful Biomedical Engineering Conference E-mail

The Chamber of Engineers’ recently held its 22nd Annual Conference, entitled Engineering: the Backbone of Healthcare. Held at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, this year the theme chosen was bio-medical engineering. The objective of the conference was to provide insight to engineers and other professionals on this ever growing branch of engineering.

The health sector has no doubt made great leaps forward to the well being of people. Little is however mentioned about the engineering knowledge required to put medical science into practice. In this conference, experts in the field swill shed light on some of the technological developments in the field. In Malta, there are various opportunities in which engineers can be involved in bio-medical engineering due to the fact that the field requires the input of other branches of engineering.

Following the welcome speech by Chamber President, Ing. Saviour Baldacchino, the keynote speech was given by Hon. Edward Zammit Lewis, Parliamentary Secretary for Competitiveness and Economic Growth. The Hon. Zammit-Lewis addressed the importance of engineering, particularly in the field of research and development.

The Hon. Zammit Lewis explained that in parallel with the propensity for growth in the biomedical engineering sector, engineering students in Malta are furthering their education at Masters and even Doctoral levels in the subject, thus providing the expertise needed to develop and guide the sector. In this regard, the Hon. Edward Zammit Lewis encouraged the Chamber of Engineers to continue collaborating with our country’s higher education institutions, to ensure that the academic and vocational opportunities to students aspiring for a career in biomedical engineering are relevant to the requirements of this sector.
