2012: Water - A 21st Century Challenge

Facing our Water Challenges

The Chamber of Engineers is proud to announce the launch of its 21st Annual Conference, entitled "Water: A 21st century challenge".  The aim of this conference is to analyse the ongoing developments and challenges being faced both locally and internationally.

In this regard, the Chamber is currently accepting submissions of abstracts related to water issues.  Contributors whose abstract is accepted will be required to give a presentation of their work during the conference, which will be held on 9th May 2012.

CoE meets Sargas AS

Coe Meets SargasThe CoE recently met with representatives from Norwegian company Sargas AS, Mr Martin Roden,Director of Business Development and Mr Claes Nygren, Director of Technical Development.

The Sargas representatives gave a presentation on a proposed green power plant in Malta, which, they claimed, would substantially lower costs than the power produced today as well as current plans. The compact power plant produces exhaust gases that are cheaper than required by EU regulation, with extremely low emissions of Co2, SO2, NOx, Mercury, soot and dust.

Consultation meeting on Environmental Permitting

 

CoE Meeting with MEPA on Environmental PermittingA delegation led by President Ing. Saviour Baldacchino recently met with MEPA representatives Mr. Michael J. Sant and Ms Rachel Decelis, to discuss the issue of environmental permitting. Ings. Ray Vassallo, Nicholas Bellizzi, Daniel Micallef, Paul Refalo, Chris Sammut and Michaela Camilleri.

MEPA is currently carrying out a public consultation on a system of environmental permitting to improve the regulatory framework applicable to industrial activities of environmental significance. This system would result in improved protection of the environment, while offering several advantages to industry, such as legal certainty, clearer definition of environmental liability and the opportunity to identify priority environmental issues to enable appropriate risk management.

CoE signs MoU with IEEE

During the Malta Engineering Excellence Awards, the Chamber of Engineers also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE).

CoE President Ing. Saviour Baldacchino stated that this signing was a sign of closer collaboration between the two organisations. He remarked that although an understanding already existed between the CoE and IEEE, now that it had been articulated and put on paper, it would serve as a more tangible point of reference for a healthier professional relationship.

High Level Submissions at Engineering Awards

DATE: 10TH December 2011

Abertax, MITA, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta and Ing. Vince Magri were the winners of this year’s Engineering Excellence Awards, an annual event organised by the Chamber of Engineers. Held on Wednesday 7th December at St. John Cavalier, the 10th edition included awards in three categories: Innovation, Leadership, and Lifetime Achievement. 

The awards were kindly presented by Parliamentary Secretary Dr. Chris Said, together with Chamber of Engineers President Ing. Saviour Baldachino. “This event is an opportunity to showcase the capabilities of the engineering community. With great satisfaction, we note that these Awards keep gaining profile and acceptance from industry,” stated Ing. Baldacchino, during his welcoming address. He congratulated all the winners and nominees for their high-level submissions.
