CoE presents recommendations to Prime Minister and Opposition Leader

CoE meets Prime MinisterThe Chamber of Engineers recently met with both Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Leader of the Opposition Joseph Muscat during separate meetings, in order to present the Chamber’s recommendations for both parties’ electoral programmes.

Profession

The Chamber stated that The Engineering Act, which regulates the profession, needs updating to reflect today's circumstances. A Council sub-committee is working on a draft update of the Act. Salient points will include obligatory continuous professional development for engineers, professional indemnity insurance for all engineers and streamlining of the definition and duties of the engineer.

Engineers' supporting technicians should also be obliged to undergo continuous technical updating on the subject matter of their respective competences.

Regulation

The Chamber stated that engineers would be pleased to assist government and society at large to make the best use of technology in various areas. The Chamber believes that this can be achieved by regulating engineering systems. Such regulation should be in place at conceptual stages and not as an afterthought.

It was remarked that green technology schemes should be devised to not only benefit government to reach stipulated EU objectives, but should also better protect the consumer who is sometimes driven into buying technology which is not up to acceptable standard.

University academic honoured by worldwide aviation industry

engineer honoured by aviation industryThe Chamber of Engineers would like to congratulate Dr Ing. Andrew Sammut, lecturer within the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering at the University of Malta, who was awarded the prestigious William E. Jackson award by the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA) for his research dealing with aircraft safety.

Ing. Sammut’s winning submission involved the design of an avionic system with the capability of detecting conflicts between aircraft on the runway. The technology has the capability of determining the safest avoidance manoeuvre that the pilots should take to clear the conflict, which is then communicated directly to the pilots in the cockpit using a novel alerting technique.

Project Management for Engineers

The Chamber of Engineers recently organised a lecture on Project Management for Engineers, in collaboration with the Malta Institute of Management. The lecture was given by Prof. Alex Roberts from Edinburgh Business School. The aim of the lecture was to focus on the transition from specialist management posts such as a chief engineer or plant manager, to a position that requires increased leadership skills, such as operations or general manager, or even starting a new company. This transition requires the learning of new skills that are not obtained during the engineering degree, such as skills like being responsible for other people's performance, for financial and marketing issues, leading transformational change in your organisation and for managing relationships with suppliers and buyers.
