The 21st Edition of the Malta Engineering Excellence Awards (MEEAs) were successfully held on Friday 02nd December 2022, at the De Paule Hall of San Anton Palace.  The MEEAs 2022 were co-organised with the Energy & Water Agency and held under the distinguished patronage of H.E. George Vella, President of Malta. This event was also kindly sponsored by Expedition42.  

The Chamber of Engineers has received a most encouraging number of nominees and was satisfied to report a high response for attendance ahead of the event, marking the excitement for the MEEAs, and their valuable importance for the engineering community and society at large.  

The Chamber President, Inġ. Malcolm Zammit delivered his address marking the opening of the award ceremony which immediately moved to the presentation of the Best Final Year Project Award which were sponsored by Bank of Valletta. The nominated students for the Electrical Engineering stream were Christopher Conrad, Thomas John Galea and Cheryl Gilford, whilst Amberlynn Bonello, Giuseppe Galea Curmi and Rachel Zammit Mangion were nominated for the Mechanical Engineering stream. The nominated students for the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) stream were Ms Leanne Briffa, Mr Jeremy James Cachia and Mr Owen Micallef. The award winners were Christopher Conrad, Amberlynn Bonello and Leanne Briffa. Prof Inġ. Andrew Sammut, Dean of the UM Faculty of Engineering and Prof Inġ. Carl James Debono, Dean of the UM Faculty of ICT joined the CoE representatives to present these awards and congratulate the fresh graduates.  

The Industrial Excellence Award 2022 was awarded to Water Services Corporation with their project Reverse Osmosis Plant at Ħondoq ir-Rummien. The nominees were ST Microelectronics Malta (1st runner up), University of Malta Racing (2nd runner up), Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology and the University of Malta – Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering.   

The Maurice Debono Lifetime Achievement Award, awarded to individuals committed throughout their career to the advancement of engineering and the profession in Malta, was awarded to Dr Inġ. Paul Vassallo who is a highly qualified Inġinier with more than 40 years experience in building services design and application to various types of buildings both locally and abroad.   

The Energy and Water Sustainability Award, sponsored by The Energy and Water Agency for projects having a significant impact on energy and water usage, was awarded to Baxter Malta for the project Reduction in Air Changes and Cleanroom Switch-off. The nominees were STMicroelectronics Malta (1st runner up), Danish Bakery Ltd. (2nd runner up), Multi Packaging Ltd. and Paradise Bay Hotel Ltd. 

The Chamber of Engineers presented a posthumous award serving as a special tribute to the late Miguel Borg, who despite being faced with a terminal illness during his studies, graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Malta. This special award was presented to Miguel’s family who accepted this award in recognition of the outstanding courage and commitment by Miguel shown during his engineering studies. 

 The President of Malta, Dr George Vella, concluded the award ceremony and addressed the audience where he congratulated all the awardees. President Vella also saluted the memory of Miguel Borg and thanked the Chamber of Engineers for the commitment to the profession in Malta.  

The MEEAs 2022 celebrated the achievement of students, engineers and organisations and has continued promoted engineering excellence in Malta in terms of innovative and sustainable solutions. The Chamber of Engineers and The Energy and Water Agency congratulate all the award winners and participants for their contribution towards engineering and society.
