Chamber of Engineers visits Malta Air Traffic Services

On the 16th of December 2024, the Chamber of Engineers visited Malta Air Traffic Services (MATS) as part of its outreach towards industry and employers of engineers.
The Chamber’s delegation was welcomed by Mr Walter Sammut – MATS Head Technical Services (UCT), Inġ. Alistair Paul Zammit – MATS Operations Specialist, Mr Antoine Sciberras – MATS Senior Head (UCT), Inġ. Chris Abela – MATS Senior Head Technical Services, and Inġ. Antoine Busuttil – MATS Head Technical Services (Infrastructure). The Chamber’s delegation was composed of Council Members Inġ. Malcolm Zammit – President, Dr Inġ. Bonnie Attard – Secretary General, Inġ. Ryan Grixti – Policy Affairs Secretary, who were joined by Inġ. Ansel Briffa and Mr Jean-Marie Darmanin, respectively Editor and Board Member of the CoE Editorial Board.
MATS explained the company’s responsibilities covering air navigation services and air traffic management for the Maltese islands and the Malta Flight Information Region. MATS assumes control of all air traffic, technical support services for all the Communication, Navigation, Surveillance infrastructure, and provision of Aeronautical Information Management in accordance with the Air Navigation License granted by the Civil Aviation Directorate of Transport Malta (TM-CAD). During the overview of operations, MATS explained the fundamental role of technology in the provision of top-quality air traffic services and the key role of engineering professionals in the implementation of projects with the interest of the airspace users, cost efficiency, as well as the environment, but never at the cost of safety.
The Chamber of Engineers expressed the importance of increasing visibility to sectors in industry which are highly technology-based and are critically dependent on STEM talent. The discussion focused on the promotion of opportunities with both engineers and engineering students and further collaboration between the Chamber and industry partners to project the attractiveness of different sectors.
