Chamber of Engineers signs MoU to contribute to the National Building Codes

On the 28th February 2025, the Chamber of Engineers (CoE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and several industry stakeholders to develop a collaborative framework for mutual collaboration. Through this agreement, the CoE will contribute its expertise to the drafting of Malta’s National Building and Construction Codes and participate in consultations on related regulations, policies, and legislation.
The signing took place between CoE Council Member, Inġ. Johan A. Psaila, BCA’s acting CEO, Perit Roderick Bonnici and other representatives from the Kamra Tal-Periti (KTP), Malta Development Association (MDA), Malta Excavation, Demolition and Recycling Association (MEDRA), Assocjazzjoni Bennejja u Kuntratturi (ABK), Civil Protection Department (CPD), the Malta College of Art, Science and Technology (MCAST) and the University of Malta (UM).
The National Building and Construction Codes will include construction regulations for health and safety within and around sites; site operations; execution of permanent and temporary works together with building regulations for demolition and excavation practices, site preparation and resistance to contaminants and moisture, structural integrity of buildings, access to and use of buildings, protection from falling, collision and impact, materials and workmanship, glazing (safety in relation to impact, opening and cleaning), fire safety, resistance to the passage of sound, ventilation, sanitation, hot water safety and water efficiency, conservation of fuel and power, drainage and waste disposal, heat producing appliances and fuel storage systems, electrical safety and security.
