Court confirms eligibility of MCAST graduates to apply for Engineering Warrant

On the 30th October, the Malta Association of Professional Engineers (MAPE) filed a Warrant of Prohibitory Injunction (Mandat ta’ Inibizzjoni) against the Board tal-Inġiniera, the regulatory body of the engineering profession. This action followed a vote within the Board tal-Inġiniera, in which a majority was in favour of allowing eligible MCAST applicants to be considered for the engineering warrant.

The hearing for the Warrant of Prohibitory Injunction was held on 10th November by the First Hall of Civil Court presided by Judge Dr Doreen Clarke. Following deliberations, on 1st December, the Court rejected this Injunction. As part of the considerations behind this decision, the Court took cognizance of the ASIIN Evaluation Process of the PWQC and B.Eng. (Hons.), which had led to a restructuring of the relevant MCAST study programmes to ensure alignment with European Bachelor-level education standards. The process of this evaluation is further detailed in this past press release from the Chamber.

The Chamber of Engineers urges the Board to hereafter pursue procedural integrity and to uphold the resulting consensus reached throughout the evaluation process in accordance with the legal framework established under the Inġiniera Act. The Chamber anticipates that the Board will carry out  warrant interviews for all the candidates who satisfy the requirements stated in Article 3 (2) in the Inġiniera Act (Cap. 321).

The CoE re-iterates its support towards all prospective and active Inġiniera educated in institutions that reflect the professional, ethical, and societal standards expected of the engineering community and the law. The Chamber of Engineers remains committed to keeping colleagues informed of developments that shape the engineering profession and trusts this update serves to provides clarity on the matter.
